17-year-old Inverness pupil becomes one of the youngest members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists

An Inverness Royal Academy pupil has become of one of the youngest members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.‍ ‍

17-year-old Hamish Black passed driving test in November 2025, and after being encouraged by his mum, he enrolled with the Institute of Advanced Motorists on their Advanced Driving Course.

He then passed this test in April 2026, which is “quite an achievement”, according to Highland Advanced Motorists’ Andrew Chatterton.

Mr Chatterton said: “Hamish says he was always interested in driving and cars and with a 30 minute drive from his home to town was keen to get his own car as soon as possible.

“He said the training was enjoyable and emphasised the main benefit of the Advanced Driving course is he is now much more aware of hazards, other drivers, and the need to anticipate what other road users may do.

“Using the new skills he has learned he now feels he is a safer driver and has played his part in making roads safer for himself and everyone else.”

Hamish’s training was provided by Dave Greer, one of the Observers with the Highland Advanced Motorists (HiAM), the local IAM Group.
